Ficus is a wood-and-linen table lamp with flaps that open and close to control the light output, from design to finished product.
Made in a Design Studio class in 2024, Ficus was developed from design to finished product, mixing several techniques: woodworking for the base and rings, laser cutting of wood veneers, and flaps lined with linen. Light passes through the fabric and escapes between the slats, creating a warm, diffuse glow.
The central detail is the flap mechanism: by turning the structure, the linen-lined slats open or close, adjusting how much light escapes, like a cylindrical blind. The result is an object that is both a lamp and a way to set the mood of a room.
The development followed Mike Baxter's method, with structured product-design stages (from research and concept generation to detailing and fabrication), making sure every form and material decision had a design rationale, built from a persona.
